Ghosts of Bothwell Castle
Bothwell Castle was built in the 13th century by the Moravia family, who began by constructing the Great Tower. They also owned Duffus Castle in Northern Scotland.
The castle was later held by the Douglas family and played a significant role in the Wars of Scottish Independence, enduring many sieges. Later, it was home to Patrick Hepburn, Lord Hailes, and future Earl of Bothwell. Its turbulent history and tragic events contribute to its reputation and folklore as a haunted castle.
The most famous spectral spirit to roam Bothwell Castle is that of Bonny Jane. Legend tells of her tragic love for a man named Edgar. Her father arranged for her to be married to Lord Malcom, another Nobleman, whom she did not love.
Defying her arranged marriage to Lord Malcom, she attempted to escape, but was captured and forced onto a boat, which then sank in the River Clyde. Her ghost is said to wander the castle grounds and the riverside of the Clyde behind the castle, often playing her lute and searching for her lost love, Edgar. Her spirit is seen most often on All Hallows' Eve.
She is not alone at the castle. James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, was held captive for many years in the 1500s before dying in a castle prison in 1578, with tales that his madness may have contributed to his restless spirit.
Spirits of females dressed in white or gray have also been seen by visitors, wandering the halls of Bothwell Castle.
Some folks have encountered a ghostly yet protective presence, which is portrayed as an ancient apparition that interacts with visitors, sometimes conveying a sense of wisdom or melancholy.
