Ghosts of Belsay Hall and Castle

Built around 1370, Belsay Castle served as a fortified residence for the Middleton family, who constructed a large, three-story pele tower complete with battlements and turrets. In 1614, Thomas Middleton added a new manor house, attaching it to the existing castle.

Belsay Hall

Once Charles Monck built Belsay Hall on the same estate, a country house in the Greek Revival style between 1810 and 1817, the castle no longer served as the family residence.

Wood decay affected Belsay Hall in the 1970s; left unfurnished, its shell now illustrates how the house was constructed.

Despite this largely peaceful history, both the castle and hall are said to host a few spectral spirits roaming the estate.

Of the two sites, Belsay Hall is known for the most prominent paranormal activity, with several reported ghosts and hauntings. The spirits of children have been seen playing in the grounds and gardens. For instance, one visitor praised the “actors”, including a boy with a metal hoop in period clothing, but no re-enactors were present at the time.

The Quarry Garden has also been the site for sightings of people dressed in Victorian-era clothing. Yet, as before, there were no costumed staff or re-enactors present.

Inside the Hall, accounts of chilling paranormal experiences persist. Some have described the unsettling sensation of invisible hands tugging at the back of their clothing in the Butler's room. Yet, each time they turned around, the room offered only shadows and silence.

The most unusual activity, witnessed on several occasions, is the chilling emergence of a hand atop the armrest of an empty armchair. In addition, doors that are firmly closed sometimes shudder, swinging open and shut, as if stirred by an invisible presence.

Belsay Castle

While Belsay Hall is the main site of reported hauntings, Belsay Castle also has its share, though less prominent. There, visitors occasionally report seeing strange mists, figures, or spirits in photographs. Also, unexplained noises and laughter from empty rooms are mentioned.
